Appalachian Herbal Wisdom Workshop. Date: Sunday, April 6th 2025
Join us April 6th on a Sunday
afternoon for a unique herbal event
with dear friend and herbal sister Ruth Shelton!
Ruth is bringing her Appalachian Herbal Wisdom here to share with each of us! I have had the opportunity to attend a handful of workshops where Ruth taught and she brings energy and great enthusiasm to her classes!
This is going to be a very informative
and immersive workshop!
Each attendee will receive printouts and packet to take home to assist in
identifying plants in your area.
During this workshop Ruth will also be teaching us step-by-step how to create a true Appalachian balm and syrup. All attendees will be taking one of each home with them as well.
WORKSHOP DETAILS:
Join The Empirical Herbalist, Ruth Shelton as she winds through these unique hills and hollers in an introductory class discussing Appalachian Herbal Wisdom. This is a perfect class to deepen your connection to the land and it’s peoples. In this 3 hour class, we will cover some of the following
History and Geography of the region- it’s much older than most people realize and spans over 2000 miles
it’s people- native and transplanted and how they all shaped the culture
Plants- The Appalachian Mountains are a huge temperate forest that is home to over 6,000 species of plant life. We will cover a selection of plants looking at roots and aerial parts including leaves and flowers.
Practices- all the above helped shape a unique modality of herbalism
Everyone will take home a packet of notes with photos to help identify the plants growing up all around us
Ruth will be showing us how to make both a plant infused balm and syrup that helped the ancestors of our area.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER:
Ruth Shelton is a master herbalist from East TN. She grew up in a small Appalachian town that helped shape her appreciation of well everything. She credits her ancestors and her grandmothers in particular as the most important influences in the kitchen, the garden and her own self hood. Every time she teaches about Appalachia it’s done in their honor.
She’s been practicing herbalism for
almost 25 years and operates out of her Apothecary in Powell, TN but travels
teaching herbalism all over the Midsouth. She’ll be in Alabama in early May at
the Wild Medicine Conference and has 3 classes at LMU in KY this May and June.
